Sad news readers, I got my computer back this week. It was completely empty except for the normal start-up files. It was not good. They said they will try to recover my novel but I dont have much hope. So forgive me if I am still writing in July.
But if we include those words and everything i written since then i'm past 48,000 which means baring any unfortunate events I will finish my book!
But I hit a weird portion of my book. Instead of pushing the story forward I went to what appeared to be meanless flashback. It has meaning now but hasn't moved my book closer to the end.
Here's a fun excerpt from my book on a drive to Boston with Tim and Olga.
Here’s a memorable conversation that came up on the ride. Billy Talent was two for one with their first song rocking out to the new billy talent song rusted by the rain and they passed a dead deer on the side of the road.
Olga piped up, “Ahh look at that deer. Its so sad when they hit larger animals like that. You just can’t do anything for them.”
Tim seeing an opportunity to connect with Olga on a deeper level piped up. “I know it is really sad. I think I would just die if I ever hit and animal like that.”
Marcus smiled, he was sure that Tim was exaggerating but still it was a damn good line.
“Well what is coming up next do you think?” Olga asked.
Tim and Marcus answered at the same time. “A raccoon.”
Marcus went on. “Its just simple probability more raccoons = more chances to get hit.” Tim nodded his agreement.
Olga glared in amazement at the both of them. “Guys I was talking about the next Billy Talent song. You know the just played that raining song.”
Tim and Marcus glanced over at each other and smiled sheepishly and both broke out a loud long laugh that Olga eventually joined with when she realized just how hilarious it was that had happened.
Tim said after a long and hearty laugh, “River below.”
Marcus followed, “The Ex”
Olga of course went for something completely different and said, “Devil in a midnight mass.”
It ended up being none of them. It was some other song from their first album that they enjoyed just the same.
After that there was the time when the radio guy asked them to call in for tickets to Coldplay in Boston if they knew what Coldplay’s first number one single in the USA.
Olga and Tim desperately tried to get in with their answers of Yellow and Clocks.
Marcus had foolishly guessed Violet Hill thinking that was the first album Coldplay had released in the states.
Olga and Tim had a good laugh at Marcus but when they actually got through to the radio station and said their consensus guess of Clocks they were completely embarrassed on the radio as the host tore them a new one for such a terrible guess.
They were of course devastated but if anything it brought them closer together. Marcus definitely got the last laugh on this one when it turned out that Violet Hill was in fact their first single. Marcus smiled smugly as Olga and Tim looked disgusted at him for not being more confident in his answers and losing them concert tickets.
Marcus was offend that they were hating on him but their anger subsided when they past a a raccoon and Tim shouted, “See Olga I was right.” He smiled cockily at her as if that was enough to get her to sleep with him.
Given Tims good looks it might have been but Olga just smiled politely probably thinking why did I ever agree to a drive with these crazy Mo-fo’s.
The rest of the drive past through Marcus’ eyes very fast. They joked they sang and had a good time and it felt like they arrived in Boston earlier than expected.
They had dinner together at nice café in downtown Boston and then dropped off Olga at Harvard. She agreed to meet them for dinner the following night and Tim got a phone number from her and he went off looking quite smug with himself.

Terrible news about the computer! How did the Future Shop guys respond to you asking them to recover your novel?
ReplyDeleteLoved the excerpt. Glad to see you drawing on real life hilarity as inspiration.
Damn it future shop!!!
ReplyDeleteBut Scott, it's incredible you made it this far and just kept writing even after your computer crashed. That's wonderful.
I hope your plot hijack turns out to be a great addition to the novel... can't wait til you cross the finish line!
