And so we begin

I amazed at Katie's Blistering pace and cant say I am that far but I am just short of 2000 words after a late night of exciting writing. One thing I noticed about this novel compared to last years is that even this early on in I know more about my character than I did about any of my characters last year.

Its pretty cool. Also following Jill's advice of swearing whenever possible. Its adding nicely to my word count though often feels forced sometimes I just don't have it in me.

Its amazing how you can change things when you start writing. At first I wanted to start my novel in London but then I shifted it to Sarnia. It just felt right. I hope this feelings continue as I try to rush along writing my novel and getting out to head start so when I have no idea where I want my book to go I'll have some time to procrastinate. :D

And here for fun an excerpt from my first chapter, I dont think anyone would read the entire thing yet:P

Marcus eased his car into a cruising speed of 120 kms/hr and turned off the 401 west on to the 402 west. It always amused him that the powers that be considered Toronto east of Kitchener when it felt more north but then again geography had never been his strong suit. Fact is Marcus was never a particularly brilliant student and in his class when growing up you would never have expected this child to be nicknamed “Aurelius”. It began as a teasing name other kids used to called him to make fun of him but after he gained a measure of skill playing hockey it turned into actually a pretty respectable nickname his teammates used to call him. But nicknames stick for a reason and past players always said Marcus had an eye for the game but it was more distant and philosophical than most. His nickname was certainly better than ‘Sparky’ or ‘Bruiser’ in any case. Nicknames like that and you don’t go far in hockey or in life.

Marcus headed down the familiar path to Sarnia. It was a pretty boring drive. With flat sight lines, and farmer’s fields as the only attraction Marcus remember fondly sleeping through most of this terrain. He had mixed feelings towards Sarnia. On one hand it was the first major junior rink that he had ever played on in his early days of playing AAA and it was a pretty decent rink all things considered. It had after all been a contender for hosting the Memorial Cup in 2008 and they don’t just hand that honour out to every city. On the other hand outside of the rink Sarnia was not a very exciting city and a lot of past teammates would have considered it somewhat of a dump (that’s the politest way of saying it anyway.) Marcus would have to agree because everyone he had known from Sarnia could not wait for their chance to leave the city but still the ice surface always held a special place in his heart and it also held a special place in the heart of the boy (young man?) he was going to see: Tim O’Shea.

  1. YAY!!!!!!!!! Tim O'Shea appears! And so soon! I am thrilled by the beginnings of your novel, Scott, and find the nickname 'Aurelius' hysterical, as well as Marcus' pondering about various nicknames. Great start! P.S. Don't worry about Katie "Type A Personality" Esmonde and her blistering pace... she will insist on being ahead of everyone all along.

  2. I have read all of Scott's novel, and it is so great! I already love his main character, and can't wait to see what happens next.

  3. I'm so happy about Tim O'Shea as well. So cool. Scott, it really shows that you are on the right path this year, by choosing something you really know about and are passionate about. I have to admit, I learned something about hockey just by reading your few paragraphs!

  4. I'm really eager to see what Tim O'Shea will be doing in your book. Jill, he's had so much success in the other novels second only to Gordon. Will Gordon the Vampyre be making an appearance in this book, Scott?

  5. Maybe I think he might show up in Philadelphia for fun. I haven't really thought of him too much.
