I am not giving much away. Obviously Marcus was going to survive after being beaten by some henchmen. I would be a bad person if Marcus would die so soon.
I will the scene right afterwards. It was a pretty fun scene to write I must admit though it may not flow as well as it did in my head.
Marcus gets saved at the end by someone who I haven't revealed yet but you have all met them so feel free to have a guess. No Prizes this time. I am thinking I am a bit too predictable which is totally fine by me.
Enjoy I think its long... not sure.
Also I was boycotting using Martha Stewart crafts as a plot device or writing material because I thought it was a silly idea...I was pretty much dead wrong on that. Note the craft of the day being used as a plot device. It's awesome!
I model this scene after a movie from the 80's I think. Have a gander at which movie. Just for fun. I think Jill and Sam have some time on their hands that they may be able to figure it out. :D
When Marcus awoke he smelled smoke. Something was burning. He tried to move his legs but could not. Even if Marcus had been able to move them it wouldn’t have felt very good. His knees were not in a good working order. The bat had left his one leg severally bruised and injured. He would not be able to put much weight on it at all.
Marcus looked down at his legs. They were tied tightly to the legs of the chair. Same thing with his hands. His hands were tied tight and he tried shifting them. It was no good, He was tied up better than a hog on ice.
Marcus looked to find the source of the fire. He didn’t have to look very far. Not very far at all. Along every wall there were flames. Everything was burning and smoke was filling the apartment. Marcus didn’t know what to do tied up and stranded with no one else he was very much alone and without options.
He needed help or he needed more time. Of course this wasn’t Harry Potter. Their were no time turners. Marcus cursed the fact that Jack Connolly wasn’t around. That under cover bastard would know what to do.
Marcus didn’t waste much time feeling sorry for himself. Just the required amount of time. Marcus looked around him. There wasn’t much that he could do with the few items around him but he did think he had a chance of getting un tied if he knocked the chair to the ground. At the very least he would be lower than the smoke.
Marcus fell to the ground on the chair with a thud and a crash. He smoked his shoulder hard against the ground. It hurt a lot. A lot more than it does in the movies. Marcus tried to straighten his legs and force his legs to slide off the chair. It was much more difficult then he hoped.
He forced his knees to push harder then he had since his combine. Still nothing the rope had tied tight to the chair. Ahh Fuck.
Marcus tried to pop his shoulder out and roll his arms over the chair. No luck. Did nothing but hurt himself more. Nothing was working the fire was getting progressively worse and he was tied up good.
Marcus scanned the ground. Looking for anything that he may be able to use. Marcus saw that he wasn’t that far from the coffee table. He looked at it closely. On top of the table there was a glass. Maybe if Marcus could break that glass and use the shards to cut himself out of make a nice craft out of them if he had the time….wait the craft that his grandmother had made him. Marcus had been wearing it when he went to the Boo-bie Mansion. Stupid Claude Giroux thought it would be fashionable in Quebec. Players from the Q thought they knew everything.
Marcus had taken it off but he had put it in his pocket. He distinctly remembered feeling the shards cut into his body when he had been beaten. Marcus couldn’t feel the necklace anymore which meant that it must have fallen out sometime when he knocked the chari over.
Great if I can get to that the I might just have a chance. Marcus used his one good, well decent good is too strong of a word, leg to spin himself around. He looked around at everything. As he spun. It was there only a couple of feet away.
Marcus spun himself around so that his hands were on the necklace. He began to saw away his ropes. It wasn’t easy but after a couple of seconds he was able to get through them all. He shed off the rope that was covering his upper body and got his hands on the shards of necklace and used it to cut his legs free.
Marcus undid those ropes as well and they also fell to the ground. He struggled to rise. His bum knee was holding him back. It was impossible to for marcus to get up fully. He crawled along to the kitchen. He remember his fire videos from when he was younger he needed to stay low and get a cloth to put over his face in order to ensure that smoke inhalation was not too bad.
Luckily for Marcus it was not very far away. Marcus pulled himself along the ground and managed to get to the kitchen. He was sweating profusely and was incredibly hot. Yet still he struggled to get to the kitchen.
He wonder if Jack was somewhere in the apartment. He hoped that for his sake he had left thinking that they were going to meet at Jackie’s Place instead of the apartment. Marrcus reached the counter and grabbed his cloth it wasn’t damp but when Marcus pulled himself up to try the tap he nearly burned himself on the handles.
Marcus when back down to the ground. He pulled himself along on the ground. He was hacking a lot. Marcus had at least 30 feet to go. He cursed Jack for having such a large apartment. For Marcus it came down to inch by inch. He continued to pull himself along.
I wish I could tell you that Marcus had been strong and had been able to pull himself perfectly along to his doors and escape. But he didn’t get that far. With 15 feet to go he was losing consciousness and when he was nearly 10 feet away his consciousness was nearly completely gone. His lungs were full of smoke and he had no oxygen and no strength.
Marcus never gave though. He continued to pull until he passed out. But dear readers here his when Marcus finally gets a helping hand from a somewhat surprising person.
Marcus heard glass break somewhere in the background and a man or was it a woman in a dark jacket. They appeared to have funky dark glasses. They grabbed Marcus arms as he lost consciousness and he was pulled out of the room to safety.

Scott, this is the most amazing excerpt I have ever read. In. My. Life. Funny, exciting, crafts - it has everything. Kudos.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on some truly inspired and inspiring writing. But I hope that you have not tried to model this after St. Elmo's Fire...because it is not, in fact, about a fire! The only thing I can think of is some James Bond movie from the 80s.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to read the entire novel, and figure out who saved Marcus!
Is it Scrap who came to rescue him?? aka, King Lightning?
ReplyDeleteAlso, that Martha Stewart shard necklace is a really handy plot device, don't you think?
I agree and no unfortunately King Lightning has played her part in this story.
