Our novels take us to the most interesting places...

So this morning writing at Starbucks I had a stroke of genius as I once again painted Marcus into a corner. I realized a fatal flaw in my novel. My novel is about my character being able to solve simple puzzles that he should have the skill to possess. But for whatever reason I am making solving the puzzles as difficult task as possible for poor Marcus. And for this he procrastinates.

Four months have passed in my novel and he only has solved one mystery and unfortunately he got sidetracked whenn trying to solve the next puzzle.

The second puzzle I wanted to have in my book is a crossword. For Marcus he has been able to get two words fill in so far because all he knows are hockey clues. So he needs help. What type of people are good at crosswords...well in my world, my grandparents so I wanted them to enter the novel somehow. Perfect right they could be in some peaceful retirement home and solve his crossword in with out blinking and then Marcus could make his way to the Boo-bie mansion in Montreal with MIke Richards and Co.

But ohhh no it can't be that simple because my character has the habit of running into Gordon the Vampyre a little too often. Another Gordon in my book and what does he do but direct Marcus into a funeral home. Guess who he meets there. Best part Marcus thinks he's in a retirement home. Sorry thats its a bit long but enjoy!

Marcus heard a soft organ melody playing the back ground. What depressing music in a retirement home and where are all the old people? Marcus had a point as he did a better scan of the room he realized that there was only two elderly couples at the front and three or so people young sitting at the side. These people looked like they were up to something. They had mischief in their eyes, that’s for sure.
Marcus went up to the front to see his grandparents. What he saw instead would have horrified many a person. Marcus was simply mortified and disgusted at the same time.
Marcus peered over the elderly couples to see what they were looking at. He saw to large maghoney coffins in place of the table where he pictured his grandparents playing bridge.
Marcus gasped, how had his grandparents died without his knowledge and why were there so few people at their apparent funeral.
Marcus wanted to yell in fury at the creepy guy was taking care of grandparents, best work indeed. MArcus was going to punch the man very hard. He yelled out loud, “What kind of retirement home is this anyway?” he began to hobble his the double doors.
The two couples turned around mortified. “Retirement home? What are you talking about young man, this is Fischer and Sons Funeral home.” The woman looked like she would smack him with her umbrella.
Marcus jaw dropped so much that it almost appeared comical. “Why did my grandparents die and no one told me then? This is a poor excuse of a funeral home.”
The two elderly couples gasped. Some were upset at Marcus’ criticism of their choice of funeral home while some were upset with the revelation Marcus had dropped on them.
“Enid and George Jorge didn’t have children. How can you be their grandchild.” The abrasive woman came forward.
Marcus smiled at the name George Jorge which is essentially calling someone George George before recovering from the shock of who had died and whose funeral he was now crashing. “You mean to say that this isn’t the funeral of Moses and Rumer Rockacha?”
“No who are those foolishly named people.” This woman was very rude.
“My grandparents, who the people who run this establishment told me were here.” Marcus said.
The scene was becoming more ludicrous by the minute. The three younger people sitting off to the side were giggling. Marcus guessed that they, like him may have been funeral crashers.
“You were misinformed. Clearly!” The woman looked like she would break out of her wrinkled skin. Marcus feeling completely hopeless and awkward about the entire situation became to edge his way back to the door.
He had mumbled an apology and was about to turn around and leave and find the real retirement home when a man came bursting through with a candle in his hand. Enter Jack Connolly.
“The power is about to die, brace yourself!” he yelled as he rolled through the double doors. He was crouched, covering his head like he was prepared for an explosion. The candle still perfectly upright the wax had barely moved from his roll. The guy looked like a professional roller.

Remember to E-mail yourself your story!

A word to the wise. E-mail your story to yourself. Computers are unreliable and pick terrible times to crash.

My computer went down after our writing sesh and now the technicians at Future Shop are hopefully going to repair it with all my files untouched.

It's a little dicey so don't let it happen to you.

As it stands today I should break the 25,000 word barrier and Marcus will soon be headed to the Boo-bie Mansion in Montreal with Mike Richards and his gang of flyers players.

Of course at a haunted house strip club, you can be sure that Gordon will be joining them.

A revelation the bible wished it had 20,163

This next scene I mixed together some Esmonde drinking experiences as well as one of my own for fun. This scene is critical to Jack solving his first puzzle and it was pretty run to watch.

I am really looking forward to writing with everyone this weekend it should be really really fun!

Jack arrived home relatively early for him at 12:45. Surprising he had no girl with him. But Marcus could smell the strong odour of vodka of his breath across the room. He was barely able to stand let alone walk. Marcus hurried over to Jack who nearly passed out onto the floor.

He pulled him to his bedroom and got him the largest bucket he could. It was a pale blue bucket Marcus would have sworn they had chugged beers from before. In any case it was perfect for vomiting.

Marcus didn’t usually stay will vomiting victims but tonight was an unusual case. He had never seen Jack like this (and they had been through some rough shit before) he could not hold his head up to vomit. Marcus was certain that if Jack was still in school he would have been escorted home by SERT.

As it turned out, tonight, Jack would be winning the Golden Bowl Trophy. Marcus stayed by Jack’s side for almost three hours as he went in and out of consciousness. Jack would on and on about how he needed to sleep because he needed to get to his job the next morning on Sea Otter Lane. When Marcus would ask Jack about his job, he would pull out his credit card and recite his PIN as if he needed to pay for something. It didn’t make any sense to Marcus but he laughed all the same and assured Jack that he would be just fine the next day to work at Sea Otter Lane.

Jack continued to rhyme off his PIN, 7, 3, 9, 9. Finally Marcus grew a little tired and quizzed jack about the numbers about what the meant.

“They spell something stupid.” With a lisp so bad and hilarious Marcus prayed it would be permanent.

“Well what does it spell for you?” Marcus asked

“Sexy!” Jack said with a wink, but it came out more like ssexeh!

Marcus laughed, “of course is that because you are sexeh or because money is.”

Jack arrogant even while drunk, “Me because I make the money and the girls find that sexeh!”

Marcus has cracked the first puzzle! 19,337

Finally my book appears to be headed somewhere. I made a Sudoku puzzle, three in fact, that held a clue in them. It was only a lucky conversation with a drunk Jack that enabled him to crack the puzzle.

I won't post that quite yet because I wouldn't want to ruin the fun of the puzzles when you are reading through my novel.

This one took Marcus a long time to figure out. I wrote him as been hopeless at puzzles. Not my best move because now there is some divine intervention heading his way.

That's okay soon he will be off to Pittsburgh to meet King Lightning and the Conspiracy builds.

Here's an excerpt from a scene from Marcus' past the beginning of his dark years in fact. Its pretty long so I shortened it to the important parts. Apparently I like writing my characters difficult scenes in his life. I guess thats true for most books. No one ever reads beyond Happily ever after. You might find the end has a familiar feel to it with a Scott Twist!

Marcus pushed the puck further up the side and went move around Gilles Rheaume who had hopped off the bench for the goalie and was charging into the play. Marcus tried to avoid him by deking left. He partially avoided Gilles’ hit and that’s probably the worst thing that he could have done.

Consider the Titanic hitting that bitch of an iceberg. Historians agree for the most part that if the Titanic had stayed on course and hit the iceberg straight on there would have been more damage at the front but the boat would have survived and even made the trip to New York.

The same goes for Marcus if he had taken the hit head on he would have been very shaken up but he would still be playing hockey. He tried to avoid the check and he probably would have it hadn’t been for the right knee of Gilles fucking Rheaume.

Gilles knew he was beat but wanted desperately to stop Marcus on a meaningless play, that’s why he stuck out his knee, that’s why he ruined Marcus’ career and almost his life. The knee was bad enough but the hit also spun Marcus around in the air and he collided head first on the post separating the bench. His head snapped back and Marcus crumpled to the ice. He would later be told he had been out cold for 15 minutes and his team fear that he was paralyzed.

A stretcher came out to take him off. He had an odd encounter with his first doctor who was about to emergency surgery on his knee.

The doctor was a tall black man with a degree from the University of North Carolina Charlotte. His name was of course Julius Pepper. This at the time had been hilarious to Marcus who was still woozy from the hit and a little high on the drugs.

Julius Pepper entered the room and introduced himself, “Hi, I am Dr. Pepper.”

Marcus roared with laughter, “You mean like the soda?” He said wittily.

Dr. Pepper slammed his clipboard hard on the ground cracking it, “Fine you jackass, operate on your own fucking knee.” He stormed off angrily much to the surprise of everyone in the room. A nurse rushed off to get him while Marcus was put under anesthesia. His last thought, note to self never ask someone if their name is like a pop.

A great scene from Mexico

So not a heck of a lot happened in my series of writing last night. Basically toured cities along the eastern seaboard scouting their talent not really sure what Joe wanted him to do when he died.

It was some fun times with Jack and some NHL players who I decided would make an appearance.

Like I said not much happened but there was a funny exchange between Jack and Marcus when Marcus recounts a fun time in Mexico, that hopefully will make people smile today!

And Jill you were wondering whether or not Gary Bettman would make an appearance. I can assure you that he will be in the book somehow. A story about a hockey conspiracy without Gary Bettman is like a Scooby Doo movie without the suck!

“You trying to buy an NHL franchise?” Marcus asked Jack bluntly, as helped himself to a glass of a Heineken from a built in mini-keg. He mentally thanked Jack for renting a sweet ass limo and briefly thought about serenading the mini keg but perished the thought when he realized he wouldn’t do it justice without a mandolin.

“What? You were smoking up at the game and didn’t let me in on that action? I thought we were friends.” Jack was deeply offended and apparently still a drug user. Marcus had been off the stuff since he met Tori, one of the conditions of being able to date her. She had been demanding, but in a good way.

“What no! I haven’t had that stuff since… Mexico?” Really was it Mexico, Marcus reflected on how long it had been since he had puffed on a joint. In a wild night, he had mess with the bull and received the horns, literally.

He still had the scar across his back when he had attempted to streak across the field at a bull fight that was in progress. This was possibly the worse sport to rush the field naked at, especially as streaking is not appreciated in Mexico.

Marcus had received a scar that vaguely resembled Emilio Estevez circa The Mighty Ducks or the virgin Mary depending on how you looked at it. In fact the only reason Marcus didn’t get arrested and charge was because the guards were too terrified of charging a person with a scar that looked like Emilio Estevez. Well more likely the virgin Mary, but Emilio is huge down there. Mighty Ducks 3 even won Best Foreign Film at the Mexican equivalent of the Oscars.

Truth be told, someone Marcus was partying with probably paid the guards off. He had been slumming it up with some pretty young things who were there for spring break from the OC. In any case Marcus had learned his lesson and he had quit pot after meeting Tori in the following weeks. Marcus prayed Gary Bettman wouldn’t be stupid to try expanding to Mexico as Marcus was unsure whether he would be able to cross the border. But at the rate Gary was making stupid decisions there would be two teams left in Canada and a new Mexican Division making the NHL the first three country league in the North America. That ass hat kept Marcus up at night, to no ones surprise, drinking.

Back to the conversation… “Sorry Jack, I just overheard you talking to the other scouts about what teams were up for sale and I was just wondering.” Marcus quickly finished.

A funny scene at Joe's Funeral 12786

When I was writing about Marcus dealing with Joe’s death I wanted to have a fun with the funeral scene because funerals are usually anything but fun. Lucky for everyone involved Jack Connolly made an appearance but not by name.

I find one of the ways that helps me keep writing when I have a block is to comment on something stupid or funny or both. Or to make a side comment about some hockey things in general that no one will appreciate except me, which is fine by me.

Anyway this scene has very little to do with Marcus but amused me just the same. It was somewhat built off the scandalous story from a few years back when Janet Gretzky was caught in a gambling ring with a current NHL coach. How he got his job with the Lightning I have no idea. What a terrible organization!

Anyway I am at 12,786 I was on a roll tonight and here is the excerpt of the funeral scene.

Marcus would like to have you believe that he had grown up since that incident but after Tori left him and he regressed to his dark year’s state of mind, it’s tough to believe. That’s why to no ones surprised we can find Marcus the day of Joe Marleau’s funeral at Jackie’s Place trying to drown his emotions knowing full well that it won’t work.

Joe’s funeral had been well attended. Many scouts in the area came and paid their respects for not only a legendary scout but a legendary person. Wayne Gretzky even made an appearance, as did his gambling wife who was wondering the crowd to see who would take five to one odds on whether or not Joe would be called Mr. Crispy by a funeral home employee. One crazy person who rolled into every room took her up on the bet and lured the mortician out of his “work area” with a handkerchief that looked and smelled like it had been peed on. He then proceeded to ask if Mr. Crispy’s body had held up under the lights right in front of Janet Gretzky.

Ten people soon approached her afterwards looking for money. At a funeral she had somehow managed to lose $500,000 dollars and Wayne had to sell himself out again by doing a pathetic Ford commercial where he passed on the torch to Sean Avery. Ford was going for more of a bad boy image these days and wanted everyone to know buying a Ford is like getting sloppy seconds.

It really sucks to be Wayne Gretzky these days, I mean as Lucille Booth had said, “I’d rather be dead, then living in Phoenix.” I think that’s an accurate description of what everyone thinks too. Why the NHL decided Phoenix was the best place for an ice hockey team no one will ever know.

For Marcus the funeral passed in a blur and a haze. Apparently Joe had asked for an open bar at his funeral so people would have something to do. Not the best think for a borderline alcoholic on a good day and a funeral for anyone is never a good day unless of course you are a funeral director. Why…Why… would you ever want to be a funeral director?

In any case Marcus took too much liberties with the open bar and was visibly drunk and wanting to make a speech about people being bricks and being keystone bricks and foundation bricks. Apparently he thought Joe was a keystone brick. Needless to say Marcus wasn’t taking the funeral very well and you couldn’t really blame him.

The two pillars that had held Marcus’ fragile comeback life together had very suddenly crumbled and it would be expected that Marcus’ life would be reduced once again back to the substance abuse he lived with in his dark years. The beautiful bar that was Jackie’s Place had the potential to turn into a slum if Marcus had been bent on re-ruining his life.

Luckily for Marcus (Jackie’s Place) he had something that was going to force him to get out of his funk. Perhaps the greatest thing about Joe was his ability to seemingly know what every person needed to deal with their problems and for Marcus he needed a distraction, big time.

Crosby Malkin in a duet?

So the thought of my last blog made me a little sad so I decided to also tell you guys about a future scene in my novel that is decidedly more entertaining and humourous.
W
hen I was driving back from Guelph on Friday I was bouncing ideas in my head about how I was going to incorporate some other people’s characters into my book. I got stuck on Indigo’s characters because for whatever reason I could not connect why Seth or her friends would ever meet Marcus.

Then I thought of King Lightning and what that would mean to a hockey person. Obviously it would be someone who would star with the Lightning. The best Lightning ever is and probably will be Vinny Lecavalier. So I thought it would be fun if Marcus was told to meet King Lightning in Pittsburgh thinking that Vincent Lecavalier would be the person to meet.

He’s going to get very confused about why he has to go to Pittsburgh for it though. Anyway, he meets up with Vinny who has no idea who what the heck he is talking about when Evengi Malkin and Sidney Crosby walk by. By chance they hear him talk about King Lightning and they say they know of a King Lightning and they are off to go watch her dance.

Marcus will be confused but will go along for the fun of it because who wouldn’t want to go hang out with Sid the Kid and Geno? It may even lead somewhere. The best part about this scene is that Crosby and Malkin do a duet together under the stage names Sidneyloo Who and I dream of Geno. Thanks to Katie and Sam for coming up with their dancing names.

If someone wants to contribute the name of the place they dance at (Jackie's Place is already taken and in London), that would be awesome or if you think you can come up with better names lets hear them and maybe they can be used.
